Shadow Sprint

About Shadow Sprint

Shadow Sprint is a dark fantasy runner that uses light itself as a difficulty mechanic. Your runner carries a lantern, and the circle of light around them is how far ahead you can clearly read the route. As the run continues, that circle shrinks, which means your effective reaction distance shortens even though the speed curve is relatively gentle.

The result is a very different pressure from the site's other Hard games. Cyber Dash is hard because hazards move; Shadow Sprint is hard because you find out about them late. Hazards are drawn as silhouettes with a clear outline, so they are always identifiable once they enter the light — but at depth in a run, 'once they enter the light' is not very much warning.

Ember pickups are the counterweight. Each one briefly expands the light radius, which makes collection a survival mechanic rather than just a scoring one. The dash covers the moments when the light fails you: it is on a short cooldown and closes distance quickly, which is often the only way past a hazard you spotted too late.

How to Play

Shadow Sprint starts as soon as you press Start and a short countdown finishes. Your runner moves forward automatically — your job is to choose the right action for each hazard as it arrives, and to keep doing it as the speed climbs.

You can pause at any time with P or Esc, and the game pauses itself if you switch tabs. There are no lives and no continues: when a run ends you can restart immediately, and your best result is saved to this browser.

Objective

Run as far as possible while your light fades, using embers to see and the dash to escape hazards spotted late.

Power-Ups

Every active power-up appears in the on-screen status area with the time it has left, so nothing about your current state is hidden inside the canvas. For a fuller breakdown of when each one is worth taking, see How Power-Ups Work in Endless Runner Games.

Scoring

Distance and embers score under the combo multiplier. Because embers also restore visibility, a high-scoring run and a long-surviving run tend to be the same run.

Scores are stored locally in your browser using LocalStorage. There is no global leaderboard on this site and no score is ever uploaded — the records panel above is labelled Local High Scores because that is exactly what it is.

Tips and Strategy

Difficulty

Shadow Sprint is rated Hard. Speed rises on a curve that approaches a ceiling rather than climbing forever, while hazard density and pattern complexity continue to increase slowly after that — so a long run keeps getting harder without becoming unreadable.

The level generator validates every section before placing it. Lane patterns always leave a route open, gaps are never wider than the runner can physically clear at the current speed, and two hazards needing different actions are never placed closer together than the minimum reaction window allows. If a section felt impossible, it was survivable but narrow. See Endless Runner Difficulty Systems Explained for how this works.

Features

Accessibility notes

Everything you need to play is available as text on this page rather than only inside the canvas: controls, objective, hazard explanations and scoring rules are all above. Start, pause, sound and fullscreen are real buttons that work with a keyboard and with a screen reader. No action in this game requires two simultaneous inputs, and decorative animation across the site respects your system's reduced-motion setting.

Shadow Sprint — frequently asked questions

Does the light ever stop shrinking?

It reaches a minimum radius rather than going to zero, so the game stays playable. Embers and the lantern surge push it back up from there.

Is Shadow Sprint scary or graphic?

No. It is atmospheric rather than horror — dark colours and silhouettes, with no gore, jump scares or violent imagery.

What is the dash cooldown?

Roughly one and a half seconds, shown as a small meter beside the score.
